Learning the Landscape: Deborah Lucas-Davis on Growing Up in Harlem

View Fullscreen

This exhibit examines Deborah Lucas-Davis's experiences in New York City schools, both in and outside of her native Harlem. Lucas-Davis attended Wadleigh Junior High School from fall 1961 to spring 1964. Prior to her time at Wadleigh, she attended P.S. 10 and P.S. 180. After Wadleigh, she attended Evander Childs in the Bronx and Louis D. Brandeis in Manhattan. Lucas-Davis's recollections shed light on the experiences and disparities of New York City schooling in the 1960s, and the importance of community in her school experiences.

The exhibit was created by Brittney Lewer, a Ph.D. candidate in the History of Education at New York University.
